What to Wear Fishing in Australia: A Woman's Guide to Beating the Sun

You know the moment. You're halfway down the boat ramp, esky in one hand, rods in the other, and you look down and realise you're wearing whatever was clean this morning. Maybe it's an old cotton tee. Maybe it's a shirt you borrowed from your partner three summers ago and never gave back. By lunchtime you're sunburnt across the shoulders, your sleeves are soaked through, and you're spending more energy being uncomfortable than you are actually fishing.

We built Tusk & Trout because we lived this exact problem, over and over, until we decided to fix it. So if you've ever wondered what to wear fishing in Australia that actually holds up to a full day outdoors, here's everything we've learned.

Why what you wear on the water matters more than you'd think

Australia has some of the strongest sun in the world, and most of us feel it before we ever see it. A morning that starts mild on the water can turn brutal by midday, especially once you add reflection off the water itself, which bounces UV back up at you from below as well as down from above.

Sunscreen helps, but it was never built to survive a full day of sweat, spray, and reapplication you'll probably forget to do. Clothing is the part of your sun safety routine that actually stays on. The catch is that most fishing shirts on the market were built for men's bodies first, with a bit of pink thrown on and called a women's range. That's exactly the gap we set out to close.

UPF 50+, explained simply

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, and it measures how much UV radiation a fabric lets through to your skin. A regular cotton tee offers very little real protection once it's thin, worn, or wet. A UPF 50+ fabric is a different story. It's built to block the sun before it reaches you, so you get real coverage without needing to think about it.

The part people don't expect is that proper sun protective fabric doesn't have to feel heavy or clinical. Ours is lightweight, breathable, and quick drying, which means you get the protection of a UPF rated fabric with none of the sweaty, stiff feeling you might associate with old school sun shirts.

How to choose a fishing shirt that works as hard as you do

If you're shopping for your first proper fishing shirt, or replacing one that's finally given up, here's what actually matters:

  • Fit. Look for a cut made for a woman's body, with room through the shoulders to cast and enough length that it doesn't ride up when you reach for a rod.
  • Coverage. Long sleeves and a collar you can pop up protect your neck, one of the spots we all forget until it's too late.
  • Fabric weight. Lightweight and breathable matters more than you think once the humidity climbs. You want protection, not an extra layer that traps heat.
  • Dry time. Between spray off the bow and the odd wave over the side, a shirt that dries fast keeps you comfortable for the whole trip.
  • Somewhere you'd actually wear it off the water. The best fishing shirt is the one that looks good enough for the pub afterwards too.

You're not out there alone

Fishing has spent a long time looking like a boys' club, and we're here to change that, one Wild Woman at a time. Our community is made up of women who fish, dive, boat, camp, and adventure across Australia and beyond, swapping tips, tagging their catches, and cheering each other on. If you're just starting out, you're welcome here exactly as you are.
