Fishing in Cairns: What to Wear for FNQ Heat and Sun

Nobody warns you properly about Far North Queensland sun until you've actually felt it. It's not just hot, it's the kind of heat that sits on your skin from the second you step off the boat ramp, thick with humidity and somehow still climbing by midday. Whatever got you through a southern summer probably won't cut it up here.

If you're fishing around Cairns, here's what actually works.

Why FNQ heat is a different beast

Cairns sits close enough to the equator that the sun feels stronger for more of the year, and the humidity means sweat doesn't evaporate the way it would further south. Add in long days out toward the reef or up the Barron River with next to no shade, and you've got conditions that punish anything heavy, tight, or slow to dry.

A lot of fishing shirts are built for cooler climates and just get pushed through in FNQ anyway. You feel the difference within the first hour.

What actually works up here

UPF 50+ rated fabric matters more in Cairns than almost anywhere else in the country, simply because you're exposed to that sun for longer, more intensely, more often. Ours is built to stay light and breathable even when the humidity refuses to let up, so you get real coverage without overheating.

Quick dry fabric earns its keep here too. Between reef spray, sweat, and the odd wave over the side near Yorkeys Knob, a shirt that dries fast is the difference between a comfortable afternoon and a miserable one.
